As more and more schools close because of the COVID 19 epidemic, I’m not going to build on easy drama or panic. I think we will be just fine if we take it seriously. In the meantime, kids are at home, and you probably work from home, too, and it’s getting a bit overwhelming. I know, being constantly disturbed while you work is hard on nerves. So let’s seat the kids by your side, put on some lovely music, and start a quiet activity with them.
It’s a rhythm : you explain and start, then you can work as they are really into it, but you also have to stop and help and restart the activity if necessary. Just roll with it, soon everybody will be comfortable and doing its own stuff. From the time my son was 3, I made all my books with him by my side, testing my activities, playing with the toys we’ve made…and also playing legos, and play dough, and dollhouse and so many things you can do by Maman’s side on her desk while she’s working. I learned that kids and cats have exactly the same reaction regarding to quiet times : the more you want to be alone, the more they want your attention. The contrary is true too : sometimes spending five minutes with them will give you hours of quiet.

J’ai vu, sur différents groupes, des messages de Mamans (surtout. Ils font quoi les Papas? Ils sont embêtés aussi mais ils demandent pas) demandant des conseils pour des activités à la maison, vu que les écoles sont fermées et que rien n’est prévu, comme on le fait pour les vacances très anticipées. Pour ma part, expat’ très éloignée avec des parents âgés que je n’avais pas du tout envie d’épuiser pendant les vacances, j’ai pris l’habitude très tot, travaillant à la maison, de jongler entre mon travail et m’occuper de mon fils en même temps. Tous mes livres ont été écrits avec mon petit bonhomme à mes cotés, l’école finissant tôt là où je vivais, pas de maternelle, il a bien fallu gérer. Je me rends compte que c’est pas une vie courante : je travaillais, avec un enfant, à la maison. Parfois c’est à s’arracher les cheveux, même le meilleur petit bouchon du monde a besoin d’attention pile au moment où l’on est à moins la même de la donner. Mon conseil? Installez vos petits avec vous sur la même table où dans la même pièce que vous, avec une activité. Commencez-la avec eux puis laissez rouler…et répondez immédiatement à la moindre question. Les enfants souvent c’est comme les chats : moins on leur donne d’attention plus ils en ont besoin.

A big paper doll poster

Mon projet préféré des préférés avec Poppik. Inspiré par mes après-midi avec mes cousines quand elles étaient petites ( elles sont toutes mamans maintenant), des poupées en papier que l’on peut habiller avec des stickers repositionnables pour de vrai. Il y a 200 stickers pour pouvoir choisir, et avec ceux en trop, on dessine ses propres poupées. À partir de 3 ans pour Camille , Madeleine, et Suzanne aussi bien sûr.

LES ANIMAUX TELS QU’ILS SONT , by R&L Lambry, maison de la presse, 1930, in French but easy to follow. Léon Lambry was an art teacher for children in Paris in the thirties and his lessons have a je ne sais quoi, that I find very chic. Kindly scanned by Patricia M., thank you so much!

DRAWING MADE EASY : a helpful book for young artists; the way to begin and finish your sketches, clearly shown step by step, by Lutz, Edwin George, 1921
George Lutz was an animator in the early times of animation industry, and his lessons are so very lively! Page 43 is my favourite.

Et aprés ça si vous avez encore besoin d’être inspiré(e)s, voici mon board Pinterest à moi, sur le quel je mettais des idées de DIY à faire avec mon fils. Je remplissais le board et il choisissait. Si vous avez le temps, c’est assez chouette à faire : je cherchais une idée, mais je regardais aussi autour. Pour un projet sur des insectes en papier par exemple, je cherchais aussi des dessins d’insectes pour s’inspirer et sortir un peu des chemins battus:
